T'04s Establish Scholarship to Honor a Friend

As the last of the snow melted in the spring, a group of T'04s were thinking hard. Not just about new jobs or a much-needed vacation, but about what their class gift should be. They had lots of ideas-such as a new bench for the courtyard or equipment for the exercise room-but they wanted to choose something more meaningful. After polling their classmates, the gift committee received a clear answer: the gift should honor Sally Jaeger, associate dean of the MBA program. The class of 2004 was the last class Jaeger admitted to Tuck as then director of admissions, and she had seen them through every phase of their life at the school-from application to coursework to graduation. To honor that relationship, the class decided to establish The Sally Jaeger/Tuck Class of 2004 Fund, a scholarship open to all incoming students during their first year.

"For many of us, Sally was an important factor in our choosing to come to Tuck," says Karen Miglionico T'04, a gift committee member. "She is an incredible ambassador for our school. And she's one of those unique people who inspires you to do your best."

The student board chose a scholarship as their gift for several reasons. "A scholarship would benefit many future Tuckies, it was the first class gift of its kind, and it would stand the test of time," says Miglionico. "And we hope that the student who receives this scholarship will exemplify the qualities of Sally Jaeger by having a high level of character, a belief in community service, and strong enthusiasm for Tuck."

The class will raise the total funds for the scholarship over the next four years, with the first scholarship targeted to be distributed to a member of the class of 2010.

Jaeger was floored when class president Marco Largos T'04 surprised her by announcing the scholarship during the Investiture ceremony in June. "I've never experienced anything like this in my life," Jaeger says laughing. "The generosity, the thoughtfulness of this class is overwhelming." Jaeger is the first Tuck administrator to have a scholarship established in her name, and she is thrilled that future students will benefit from a gift made in her honor.

"The best part of all," says Jaeger, "is knowing that because of this scholarship, I will always be a part of the class of 2004 and they'll be a part of me."
