European Sovereign Debt Crisis… Professor Matt Slaughter discusses how although EU leaders laid out broad policy aspirations for how to resolve their sovereign debt crisis, there are difficult policy actions that need to been taken to realize those aspirations. One of those difficult actions is finding capital to expand the European Financial Stability Facility. In a telling sign of where global economic power lies today, instead of reaching out to the United States or Japan, European officials traveled to China—the country whose stunning economic growth and sound macroeconomic policies give the Chinese government today trillions of dollars in investible capital.

China, Patents and U.S.… Professor Matt Slaughter talks about recent labor market statistics and how improving intellectual property protection in China could create over 2 million jobs in America. The International Trade Commission reported that U.S. firms believed that improved intellectual property rights protection in China could boost their annual revenues by as much as 20% and that would allow them to hire more workers. The broader message for Washington is if the U.S. is to have real growth, monetary and fiscal stimulus will eventually need to be replaced with innovative policy initiatives that spark private sector hiring and related investment.

Japan’s Earthquake: Supply Chain… Brian Tomlin, Tuck Associate Professor of Business Administration, of the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, discusses how the earthquake and tsunami in Japan have affected worldwide supply chains for automobiles and electronics.

Global Business Perspectives: Diederik… Dartmouth Associate Professor of Government Diederik (Dirk) Vandewalle studies the Middle East, and he is the author of A History of Modern Libya (Cambridge University Press, 2006). At Tuck, he is an adjunct associate professor, and he teaches a "mini-elective" course called "Doing Business in the Arab Gulf States." In this video he explains what's covered in his class (history, culture, patronage, sovereign wealth funds, Islamic finance). And he also talks about the relationship between politics and economics, and the impact that the recent uprisings in northern Africa might have on the six nations that make up the Gulf Cooperation Council: Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

Teaching Entrepreneurship Gregg Fairbrothers, adjunct professor of business administration and founding director of the Dartmouth Entrepreneurial Network, describes the process of teaching—and learning—entrepreneurship at Tuck. "A lot of business school programs are much more curricular. Ours is much more experiential," he says.
