"The lasting value of Tuck is about return on investment. Whatever you put into it—whether it's visiting campus to participate in a class, recruiting students, making contributions, or keeping up with Tuck friendships—you get very solid returns. Tuck values quality, unity, and relationships. That's why we are involved."
Early in their first year at Tuck, Bill McLaughlin invited Martha Symmes to go for a bike ride. What she figured would be a simple spin into Hanover to get a snack turned out to be an ambitious 15-mile ride through the rolling New Hampshire countryside. Martha, a Texan, became enthralled with her new surroundings, as did the two with each other. It makes sense that this couple, whose initial get-together at Tuck led to their long marriage and three children (two of whom are students at Dartmouth), have made gifts with family and friends to create a central space for social gathering on campus.
Marriage and career have taken Bill and Martha McLaughlin to Brazil, Mexico, Puerto Rico, London, and their current home in Minneapolis, where Bill is chairman and CEO of Select Comfort Corporation. Perennial TAG donors, they made a naming gift to help create the David T. McLaughlin D'54, T'55 Atrium, in memory of Bill's father, in Tuck's new Raether Hall.
