Kirc on Tuck's network:

Kirc Savage T'07 came to Tuck following a five-year engineering career at Procter & Gamble's manufacturing facility in Georgia. During that time, he aspired to ownership of his own engineering consulting practice. But he recognized that his experience and network lay in engineering, not business. So he decided to pursue an MBA to broaden his analytical and quantitative business skills.

When researching B-schools, Savage had a gut feeling about Tuck. While many schools approached him with the attitude "what can you do for us?" Tuck seemed to ask "what can we do for you?" This personal attention, along with the school's supportive, accessible community, made his decision an easy one.

Once at Tuck, Savage took advantage of the networking opportunities the school provides. "I wanted to get to know my classmates—not just on a cursory basis, but to really get to know them," he says. "They came to Tuck from all over the world with very accomplished careers. These are the people who will be the future leaders of the world."

In his first year, Savage was elected president of the class of 2007. "I truly enjoyed the opportunity to work with my classmates and the broader Tuck community to help them see their issues and problems through to resolution. Acting as a change agent was very satisfying."

Savage says that the Cohen Leadership Development Program at Tuck—which is tightly connected to the first-year core curriculum—opened his eyes to his potential as a leader. "It was really interesting to map out where I was and where I thought my gaps fell, and to compare that with the perspectives of people in my study groups," he recalls. "The feedback I received made me consider opportunities outside of engineering that I hadn't thought of pursuing." Subsequently, Savage spent his summer internship working in supply chain financial modeling as part of the PepsiCo Leadership Development Program, gaining general management insights and practical finance experience.

Savage decided to pursue career in management consulting after graduation. "I'm interested in the customer-facing element, the variety of problems tackled, and the potential to immediately make concrete the business concepts I have learned," he says.
