"I went to Tuck because I wanted an education that would help me bring new ideas to an old-fashioned business," says Peter Georgiopoulos. "Tuck helped me in what I've done in my business career. It's been a stepping-stone that's helped me in life."
There are hundreds of Tuck alumni who will enthusiastically say that the school's emphasis on teamwork is one of its strongest attributes. Peter Georgiopoulos is of two minds about that. He is not a fan of the shared decision-making part of teamwork for one simple reason—when he's working on a project, he wants to be in charge. But the interpersonal part of working in a team environment, the way it helped him connect with classmates, was a highlight of his Tuck years. "I made great friends there, and to me, friends are the most important thing in life. Period."
After a brief, post-Tuck stop on Wall Street, Georgiopoulos launched a successful career in the shipping business. He is founder and chairman of General Maritime Corporation, one of the world's largest oil-tanker companies, and of the bulk shipping company Genco Shipping and Trading. He is also chairman of the oil services company Aegean Marine Petroleum. He serves on the steering committee for Tuck's Investing in Excellence capital campaign and is a member of the board of overseers.
