Tuckies Disperse for Spring Break

By Sara M. T'14

We're in the midst of our two-week spring break and Tuck students and partners have taken off for all corners of the globe. The highest concentration of Tuckies is in Sun Valley (see Claire's post below). Below is just a sampling of what other Tuckies are up to during the break.

Gabe
Where: Costa Rica
With: Four other T'14s
Why: "Fun in the sun!"

Suzanne
Where: Morocco
With: Six other T'13s
Why: "Camels, chicken tangine, and snake charmers! I'm hoping to take advantage of the last break before starting work full time."

Michael
Where: South Africa (Johannesburg, Pilanesberg, Cape Town)
With: 20 other Tuckies, including native South African Professor Stocken
Why: "This trip is a Learning Expedition organized by Tuck. We'll be meeting with companies around the country learning how business is conducted there. I'm looking forward to the traditional braii at the Stocken family house!"

Nick
Where: Japan
With: Several other Tuckies
Why: "For the Tuck Learning Expedition with Professor Argenti and because I get to room with Ben."

Cara
Where: San Carlos, Mexico
With: Three other T'14s/future roommates
Why: "To relax, attend a yoga retreat, and taste Tequila."

Sam
Where: White Mountains in Alaska
With: Eight other adventurous (crazy) Tuckies
Why: "Ryan and I are taking a crew of Tuckies on a 6 day, 60 mile cross country ski trek in the White Mountains. We will be joining in some Alaskan Native dancing, watching dog sledding, and enjoying some Northern Lights!"

Summer
Where: South Dakota
With: Three other T'14s/FYP team
Why: "Our team’s First Year Project aims to help address and improve the chronic underfunding situation at a health care facility located in Belcourt, North Dakota on the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians Reservation. Our goal is to maximize the facility’s insurance revenue such that it can better meet its annual operating expenditures, thereby increasing the availability of healthcare resources to the community."

Joe
Where: Israel (Jerusalem, Dead Sea, Haifa, Tel Aviv)
With: 18 Tuckies, Professor Kleinbaum, and Mathias Machado (CDO Adviser)
Why: "To understand how a country with limited resources can be one of the most thriving centers of innovation in the world. And to sing karaoke."

Meg
Where: Madagascar
With: Four other T'14s/FYP team
Why: "To meet with our FYP client that is a marine conservation organization. We'll be working with them to evaluate the current business model and future growth prospects."

Mike
Where: Miami then Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
With: Fiancé (also a T'14), family and Tuck friends along the way
Why: "For fun and more fun. This is hopefully the first of many trips while I'm at Tuck."

Sumeeta
Where: Ghana
With: Another T'14
Why: "To work on my FYP with a nonprofit dedicated to providing books to people all over the world utilizing mobile and e-reader technology. We'll meet with the team, conduct field research and interviews, visit schools using e-readers, and aid them in expansion efforts."

Erika
Where: Puerto Rico, then Norway
With:With a fellow T'14, then with her husband
Why: "First to Puerto Rico to get some much-needed sun and surf after the long Hanover winter. We’ll spend a few days on the beach seeing how our newly discovered hockey-balance skills translate to the surf, putting-off spring term reading and just generally relaxing after a tough week of finals. Then to Norway to meet family for some skiing and fun. We’ll probably do some good cookin’ and pull out the guitar to get some songs ready for the sure-to-be awesome Tuck Band performance at ASW in April! "

Danny
Where: Japan
With: A whole lot of Tuckies
Why: "To learn about Japanese life and culture.  The Japan Fun Trek is organized and led by the Japanese first years who take us to places such as Kyoto and Hong Kong. One day we go on a boat tour of the Hozu River and to a Buddhist temple to learn the traditional tea ceremony and meditation."

Me (Sara)
Where: Southwest US (Sedona, Grand Canyon, Grand Staircase Escalante, Bryce Canyon, Zion)
With: Four other T'14s
Why: "We're heading south in search of sun, adventure, and gorgeous scenery. We'll be doing lots of hiking and happy-houring."
