Jim Allwin T'76
In Memoriam: Overseer Jim Allwin T'76
Tuck Overseer Jim Allwin T'76 passed away on October 19, 2007.
Message From the Dean
A man who embodied many ideals of a great citizen, business leader, and alumnus has died—Jim Allwin T'76. Our hearts go out to his family and many friends.
Jim shared his great talent and success with a vast panorama of people in society. He created and supported schools in the inner cities, he gave his time and wealth to many worthy organizations such as Communities In Schools, the nations largest stay-in-school program, The Alliance for Youth, and the National Mentoring Partnership, and he launched and participated in Tuck's Allwin Initiative for Corporate Citizenship. In some ways he seemed larger than life in his stature, his calm, his commanding presence but he was also accessible, kind, and self-effacing. He was a long-time member of the Tuck Board of Overseers and he participated in support of Tuck in innumerable ways throughout the years. His presence will always be felt here at Tuck as the Allwin Initiative continues to help mold the character of our students. We who benefited from his friendship will miss him, but his legacy of sharing will live on and his life will be a continuing inspiration.

Message from Aetos Capital
It is with great sadness that we inform you that our friend and colleague, Jim Allwin, passed away on October 19. Throughout his battle with brain cancer, Jim demonstrated exceptional courage, perseverance and grace, and was unwavering in his enthusiasm and commitment to the ongoing growth of Aetos Capital. Our deep sense of loss is mitigated only by knowing what a great privilege it was to know and work alongside him. Jim leaves behind a remarkable legacy in both his business and charitable endeavors, reflecting his tremendous abilities as a visionary and leader.
Jim founded Aetos Capital in 1999, and the firm has grown into a dynamic organization of nearly 300 people with $12 billion in assets invested in real estate, absolute return fund of funds, and, through our combination with AEA Investors, private equity. Jim's passionate commitment to excellence and integrity infused every element of the firm and its activities, and we are proud to carry these standards forward. Prior to founding Aetos Capital, Jim also distinguished himself throughout his 23-year career at Morgan Stanley. He not only held senior roles in investment banking, but also led Morgan Stanley Investment Management and the firm’s Real Estate and Private Equity Funds. Jim had great passion for giving back, and his contributions in the areas of education, health care and the arts were extraordinary. For 28 years he was a board member of Communities in Schools, the nation’s largest stay-in-school program, acting as chairman for 11 of those years. He also served on the boards of America's Promise, The Alliance for Youth, and the National Mentoring Partnership, as well as the board of overseers at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, where he founded the Initiative for Corporate Citizenship. He previously chaired the board of trustees of Greenwich Academy and was a member of the investment committee of Yale University. In the area of health care, Jim was actively involved as a board member of the Yale-New Haven Hospital System, and served as a member of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Investment Committee. Jim's interest in modern art led him to serve as a trustee of both the Dia Art Foundation and the American Patrons of Tate.
We have been overwhelmed by the expressions of care and concern for Jim and his family, as well as the steadfast support for our firm during his illness. To express written condolences to family members, letters can be addressed care of Bernadette Torres, Aetos Capital, 875 Third Avenue, 21st Floor, New York, NY 10022.
Services and Contributions
A wake for Jim Allwin was held in Greenwich, Connecticut, at Leo P. Gallagher & Sons on October 24. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to Communities In Schools, the stay-in-school program which Jim was so committed to for the last 28 years.
