The Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIMB) has selected Praveen K. Kopalle, professor of marketing at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, as one of three recipients for their 2011 Distinguished Alumni Award (DAA). The award was instituted in 2008 and is given each year to a chosen few alumni who have excelled in industry or academia and thereby contributed to society. Kopalle received this award based on his contributions to three key domains: research, teaching, and managerial impact. The awards will be presented in Bangalore on October 28, 2011, the 38th Foundation Day of the institute.

On the occasion of the announcement, Professor Pankaj Chandra, Director, IIMB said, “For close on three decades now, IIMB students have made significant contributions to industry, commerce, academia, and society on a global basis. The DAA is just one of the ways in which the Institute applauds and recognizes their roles as brand ambassadors of the Institute. I extend my congratulations and best wishes to this year’s winners.”

Kopalle’s research has been at the intersection of technology and marketing, particularly in the retailing domain. He serves as the associate editor of marketing science at the Journal of Retailing and is also on the editorial boards of Marking Science, Marketing Letters, and other top journals. He has spoken at over 40 universities and institutes worldwide and combines various techniques and analysis to test theories and to inform the actual practice of marketing.

Kopalle’s teaching shows a synergy between his teaching, research, and managerial interests. He considers open discussions in the classroom to be a platform for a two-way learning process. During his tenure at Tuck, Kopalle has taught over 2,225 MBA students. His method of teaching his students the difficult science of marketing and statistics fits well with the Tuck model of bringing research-based expertise into the classroom.

Kopalle introduces his students at the Tuck School to Indian culture in his lectures and brought 20 of his MBA students to India for a cultural and educational trip, where he set the stage for their educational activities, and delivered an orientation on marketing.

Kopalle commented, “It is an honor, privilege, and a pleasure for me to receive the 2011 Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Indian Institute of Management at Bangalore. It is indeed very humbling to be recognized by my alma mater with this award.”
