HANOVER, N.H. - The Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth has begun the new year with a strong focus in India, through the launch of the Tuck India Initiative. Dean Paul Danos and Professor Vijay Govindarajan will kick off the initiative in mid-January, with visits to Chennai, Mumbai, and New Delhi. This focus comes in a year where the school received number one recognition in both The Wall Street Journal and Forbes rankings of MBA programs in the U.S. and abroad.

The India Initiative was created to increase Tuck's presence and knowledge of its programs, faculty, students, and network throughout the country and at Tuck. As part of the initiative, Tuck will rely on its Indian students who are involved in the school's Ambassador Program to participate in recruiting, alumni outreach, and press events. In the last month, Tuck ambassadors were in India hosting and planning receptions and events for prospective students in Bangalore, Kolkata, Mumbai, and New Delhi. Additionally, they organized an essay contest targeting employees of the top companies in Bangalore, offering contest winners a copy of Professor Govindarajan's new book, Ten Rules for Strategic Innovators—from Idea to Execution (Harvard Business School Press, 2005), and an invitation to meet and attend a reception with him while he is in India in January.

"There are so many highly-qualified Indian students right now that it has become a priority for Tuck to speak with Indian students in their country, and to make a real effort to get the best and the brightest to come to Tuck—one of the best business schools in the world," said Dean Danos.

Recently the school has seen an increase in Indian applications, and students have come to Tuck from leading companies such as Cisco Systems, Inc., Hindustan Lever Limited, McKinsey & Company, Schlumberger, and the Tata Group. Through the first three application periods for the class of 2008, and with one round left to go, Tuck saw an approximate 14 percent increase in Indian applications as compared with the total of last year's application rounds. As a whole, Tuck application numbers are also significantly rising. To date there has been an approximate 40 percent increase in applications as compared with last year, demonstrating a growing resurgence in business school interest.

As prospective students are looking at Tuck for a world-class business education, leading executives from around the globe continue to turn to the school to help them address strategic business issues. Global Leadership 2020, Tuck Executive Education's flagship consortium, will hold the second of its three intensive weeklong modules January 13-20 in Chennai, India. The module, led by Professor Govindarajan, will look at doing business in an emerging market, technology and global strategy, and organizational DNA for rule changers. It will also include site visits to local companies and a practitioner panel on "Multinational Enterprise Strategy for Developing Countries." This is the seventh offering of Global Leadership 2020.

Following Global Leadership 2020, Professor Govindarajan will travel to Mumbai and New Delhi where he and Dean Danos will attend Tuck admissions receptions, networking events, and press meetings. A top expert in his field, Professor Govindarajan was recently named to The Thinkers 50 (www.thinkers50.com) ranking as one of the most influential living management thinkers. He will speak frequently during his visit about his research and new book.
