HANOVER, N.H.—The board of overseers of the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth has awarded the 2006 Overseers Medal to Akira Uehara T'66. The Overseers Medal was conceived by Tuck Overseer Frederick B. Whittemore D'53, T'54 in 1990 to honor Dean Emeritus Colin C. Blaydon as he stepped down from leadership, and is presented annually at Investiture to an individual who has exemplified distinguished leadership, integrity, and service to the Tuck community.
Paul Danos, dean of the Tuck School, nominated Mr. Uehara for the award at the spring meeting of the board. "Mr. Uehara is the embodiment of everything that this award stands for, and all that we aim to instill in our students," he said. "His passion for his work is inspiring, and his impact on the pharmaceutical industry undeniable. Over the years he has been one of the biggest supporters of higher education in Japan and here at Tuck and Dartmouth, and we are honored to present him with this award."
Mr. Uehara is president of Taisho Pharmaceutical Company, a Japan-based pharmaceutical company engaged in the manufacture and sale of self-medication and prescription pharmaceuticals. Under his leadership, the company has moved into the global marketplace, beyond Japan and into the U.S., Europe, China, and other markets. He has been recognized as a leader in his industry, having served as chair or vice-chair of virtually all of the leading related industry associations in Japan, and was named Chairman of the World Self-Medication Industry. In 2003 he was honored by his government with the Award of the Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare for Excellent Contribution on Pharmaceutical Affairs.
Mr. Uehara serves as a member of the board of overseers at Tuck, where he and other members are responsible for advising the dean on the strategic direction and mission of the institution. Since its inception, he and his family have generously supported Tuck's Center for International Business, a research center dedicated to education and research on international issues facing business and national leaders. Mr. Uehara has served on Dartmouth's President's Leadership Council and has been a continuing supporter of the Rassias Foundation, which speeds language learning and increases language retention. He is also a member of the board of councilors of Keio University, vice-chancellor of Josai University, and a member of the council of Seikei Gakuen University in Japan.
Founded in 1900, Tuck is the first graduate school of management and consistently ranks among the top business schools worldwide.
