HANOVER, N.H.—Businesses today cannot afford to ignore the mounting environmental and social challenges facing society. In this spirit, corporate social responsibility takes center stage at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth through the Business and Society conference held on January 16-18.

For the past six years, the annual student-run conference has brought together some of the world's most knowledgeable industry experts and influential business leaders to investigate how modern businesses can achieve both a profit and a positive impact on the environment.

Keynote talks will be given by John Brock, president and CEO of Coca-Cola Enterprises, and Matthew R. Simmons, chairman of Simmons & Company International.

The conference theme is "Oil and Water: Business Opportunities to Fuel our Future."

"By focusing on oil and water, we're discussing two of earth's most critical resources," notes Dave Adams T'08, conference chair. "While oil supply is a chief concern of businesses today, water scarcity issues will have a profound impact on future generations."

Tuck Dean Paul Danos says the current generation of MBA students thinks more about the interplay between business and the community than any he's seen throughout his 30-year career in the business school industry. "Students are starting to realize that the power of business to impact society is immense," Danos says. "In today's business environment, successful leaders must strike a balance between the responsibility to their shareholders and to society."

Panel discussions will investigate a variety of topics, including the financial risk of climate change, the state of clean-tech investing, and the future of responsible water management.

Institutional sponsors include Tuck's Allwin Initiative for Corporate Citizenship, the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth, and Vermont Law School. Corporate sponsors include Coca-Cola Enterprises, John Deere, Eaton Corporation, Harpoon Brewery, Hill Holliday, Microsoft, Seventh Generation, and Upstream Waste Management.
