HANOVER, N.H.—On February 22 and 23, MBA students from 14 schools gathered in Hanover to take a break from classes and recruiting and join Tuck for its annual Winter Carnival. The weekend featured ski and snowboard races, snow sculpting, a hot-dog-eating contest, and the venerable Kneissl Cup.

Good weather and eager participants drove the weekend’s spirit of competition and revelry. “We had at least 75 volunteers from Tuck,” said Duncan Reece T’09, an event organizer, “and across the entire weekend’s activities approximately 600 people—including Tuck students, partners, alums, and visitors—took part in Winter Carnival.” Participants came from as far away as North Carolina and Toronto.

The main attractions of the weekend were the ski and snowboard races held at the Dartmouth Skiway. Perhaps due to home-team advantage, both the ski and snowboard races were won by Tuck teams. And former U.S. Ski Team member and partner of a Kellogg student, Darah Schofield, won first place in the women’s individual competition.

While the skiing was impressive, the racers’ costumes may have stolen the show. “We enjoyed the Tuck Business Formal team, and we all were relieved that Caroline Newcomb T’09 didn’t fall while racing her two runs in a suit skirt,” noted Reece.

The festive day on the slopes featured music provided by Dave Hill T’08 and food provided by local sponsors Bagel Basement and Boloco. Winners of the team events won custom designed jackets from Fuze. The Basin Ski Shop at Killington supplied the individual winners with new skis and snowboards.

The revelry continued off the slopes at an 1980s themed dance party at Whaleback Mountain, featuring all night dancing and brightly colored one-piece ski suits.

Closing out the weekend was the Kneissl Cup, which Reece describes as the most important social event of the weekend. “Effectively it marks the finale of Winter Carnival, when participating schools finish off the races with a toast and a challenge of speed and dexterity,” he noted.

Reece also noted the goodwill that marked the event. “The camaraderie between the schools was the best part of the weekend,” he said. “And the hospitality displayed by our classmates, faculty, staff, and Upper Valley community facilitated a great event. The Tuck community demonstrated why Tuck and the surrounding area is such a special place—we believe that more than a few of our guests left a little envious of what we have here.”

This year’s Winter Carnival was sponsored by Bank of America, Oliver Wyman, Fuze, L.E.K. Consulting, Basin Ski Shop, Boston Consulting Group, SkiGroup.net, Boloco, Boston Beer Company, and the Bagel Basement.
