HANOVER, N.H.—The Allwin Initiative for Corporate Citizenship at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth has announced the first Allwin visiting executive, John "Jack" McGuire, who will join Tuck for the spring term. McGuire, former president and CEO of the American Red Cross, has more than 25 years of experience in both the nonprofit and for-profit sectors.

During the spring quarter, McGuire will teach a mini-course on disaster management, for which he has written a case with Nick Richardson T'08. He will also host student lunches to provide a forum for discussions on a range of topics, including the differences between nonprofit and for-profit management.

"It is a distinct honor to serve as the Allwin visiting executive at Tuck this year," says McGuire. "I look forward to sharing with Tuck students my experiences and discussing the values and lessons gained from them."

McGuire will make several public speaking appearances throughout the quarter. He will speak to the Tuck Net Impact Club about the impact of the Johnson & Johnson credo as an ethical guide for company managers from his first-hand experience as a manager with the firm. Drawing from his knowledge as president and CEO of the American Red Cross, McGuire will also give a talk about the Hurricane Katrina disaster and responses.

Richardson explains that McGuire brings to Tuck students his experience and practical approach to management. "Jack has a remarkable set of experiences to draw on," he says. "One of the best things about working with him was hearing how his work—in the military, corporations, and nonprofits—has shaped his own thinking on the subtle but critical difference between managing and leading, or as he likes to say, between problem solvers and problem finders."

McGuire received an MBA from Harvard University, then served as a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps. In addition to his role at the American Red Cross, McGuire has served in several positions of responsibility at Johnson & Johnson's Ortho Diagnostics, Inc. He also acted as president and CEO of Hemasure, Inc., a company which developed products to increase the safety of donated blood and improve blood transfusion and collection procedures.

Tuck's Allwin Initiative for Corporate Citizenship helps students to develop the skills to manage increasingly complex interactions between business, governments, and the nonprofit sector.

Founded in 1900, Tuck is the first graduate school of management in the country and consistently ranks among the top business schools worldwide. Tuck remains distinctive among the world's great business schools by combining human scale with global reach, rigorous coursework with experiences requiring teamwork, and valued traditions with innovation.
