HANOVER, N.H.—On May 10, the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth will host the 24th annual Run for the Kids. The student-organized charity road race includes a 10K run, a 5K walk/run, and a 1K kids' fun run. A yearly tradition at Tuck, Run for the Kids provides students with an enjoyable opportunity to give back to their community. As in previous years, funds raised will go to three local nonprofit organizations: David's House; the Children's Hospital at Dartmouth (CHaD); and Upper Valley Child and Family Services. All races are open to the public.
Run for the Kids has raised more than $160,000 over its 24-year history, with last year's race bringing in approximately $10,000. This year, Tuck students want to raise even more funds for the charities by enlisting even greater community participation.
"This year we are calling on the entire Tuck community, the greater Dartmouth community, and Upper Valley residents of all ages to participate in this great cause," says Mark Valkenburgh T'08, co-chair of the event. "These three local charities do crucial work for kids and families in our community and beyond, and we are excited by the chance to give back."
In addition to running, community members can also participate as volunteers and donors. Runners' friends and families are encouraged to join in the festivities and come out to cheer on race participants. Organizers would like to see more children get involved this year, and parents are also welcome to push the younger kids in strollers.
In addition to the races there will be other community events throughout the day. Highlights include a family friendly post-race barbecue, music, and games for the kids.
Prizes will be awarded to the top finishers, and other "spot prizes" will be given out throughout the day.
Race day check-in is from 8-8:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 10, in Tuck Circle on the Dartmouth College campus. The race starts at 9:00 a.m. and finishes back in Tuck circle. For more information and registration, please visit www.runforthekids.org.
Flagstone RE and The Parthenon Group are the platinum sponsors of this year's event. Gold sponsors include Brooks and Hypertherm. Silver sponsors include Eaton Corporation and Systems Plus Computers. Bronze sponsors include John Deere, Tele Atlas, and Bear Stearns. In-kind donors include The Bagel Basement, Ben & Jerry's, Coca-Cola, Harpoon, Omer & Bob's, New Balance, and Runner's World.
David's House is a home-away-from-home for families with children being treated at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Although daily operating costs average $80 per room, David's House requests only $10 per night for rooms and meals, and families are never turned away if they are unable to pay. Donations help defray the remaining costs.
Through its Child Life Program, CHaD provides opportunities for children and families to develop a better understanding about hospitalization and illness in order to minimize psychological trauma. Run for the Kids' donations are used to purchase toys, games, and other supplies for the ChaD program center.
Upper Valley Child and Family Services is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the well-being of children by providing an array of social services to strengthen family life and by promoting community commitment to the needs of children. Funds raised through Run for the Kids will help support services to Upper Valley communities.
