HANOVER, N.H.—Many incoming students to the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth kicked off their MBA experience by taking part in one or more of Tuck's pre-term programs. The programs provide a way for students to bond with classmates and prepare for the academically challenging year ahead.

One group of students spent a week at the Outward Bound School on Hurricane Island, Maine. The program, designed specifically for Tuck, allowed students to discover their strengths, develop personal resources, and problem solve while either sea kayaking or sailing.

"Outward Bound is a wonderful group experience that allows students to work on their leadership and team skills while achieving physical goals," said Sally Jaeger, assistant dean and director of the MBA program.

Another contingent of students took part in TuckBuilds, a week of community service. Organized by second-year students and Tuck's Allwin Initiative for Corporate Citizenship, 23 students worked with two nonprofit organizations in the Upper Valley – COVER Home Repair and the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity. By day students were busy building and repairing homes in the area. By night they ate dinner with members of the Tuck community and listened to guest speakers share their perspectives on corporate responsibility.

"A commitment to community is an integral part of the Tuck education and tradition, and I can think of no better introduction to this school than TuckBuilds," said student organizer Jenn Blazejewski T'09. "It is a uniquely appropriate way to begin one's Tuck journey."

Another pre-term activity focused less on creating bonds with fellow students and more on providing individuals with the necessary academic tools to succeed at Tuck. This one-week refresher course for quantitative math and Excel skills, vital for the core curriculum, is affectionately referred to as "math camp" by those who participate.

"As someone that worked in nonprofits prior to Tuck, I needed the extra week to familiarize myself with the basic concepts before the first year actually started," said Jason Freeman T'08. "Math camp allowed me to get a jumpstart on the more challenging quantitative parts of the MBA without the pressure of doing it for real."

Another pre-term program offered this year introduced incoming international students to life and work in the United States. Over a five-day period, the students worked with the Career Development office and others to touch on American business culture, life at Tuck, speech and presentation skills, the case study method, résumé writing, interviewing techniques, and networking. Students spent the afternoon in mock classes taught by Tuck faculty and had access to second-year teaching assistants.
