HANOVER, N.H.—Upholding a tradition of good-natured yet fierce competition on the ski slopes, Tuck hosted 268 MBA students from 14 schools at the 24th annual Winter Carnival on February 20-21.
Bright, clear skies and a layer of freshly fallen snow created ideal race conditions at the Dartmouth Skiway for the skiers and snowboarders participating on coed teams. Tuck made the most of its home course advantage with team and individual victories in both the snowboarding and skiing events. Along with the day’s physical challenges came the creative challenge of choosing an appropriate costume. Racing attire this year ranged from 1980s-vintage ski gear to Hawaiian-themed clothing, with one skier from a visiting school traveling the downhill course in a Speedo.
Though the races were the weekend’s main attraction, Tuck Winter Carnival remains a family-oriented event with a special emphasis on socializing. The festivities began Friday afternoon with a snow sculpture competition, followed by Tuck ’Tails and a kick-off party. Saturday’s activities included a Tiny Tuckie play date to keep children entertained during the skiing and snowboarding competitions.
“The weekend was a huge success,” says event co-organizer Paul Schned. “Over 600 business school students participated throughout the weekend and managed to uphold the traditions of Tuck Winter Carnival. Mother Nature helped us out with terrific weather and plenty of snow, and despite the challenging economy, our generous sponsors and alumni donations allowed us to host a full weekend of events and activities.”
“There’s no other event like Tuck Winter Carnival,” adds Mindy Mraz T’09, who also helped organize the event. “It incorporates so many different business schools and allows every participant to co-mingle and network.”
Sponsors included Ibex, Murphy’s on the Green, skigroup.net and Crested Butte, Nordica, M&T Bank, Global Rescue, Goldman Sachs, Graham Partners, Genentech, Boloco, Adina, Bagel Basement, Long Trail, Ramunto’s Brick Oven Pizza, and General Mills. Alumni skiers from past winter carnivals also contributed to this year’s event.
Founded in 1900, Tuck is the first graduate school of management in the country and consistently ranks among the top business schools worldwide. Tuck remains distinctive among the world's great business schools by combining human scale with global reach, rigorous coursework with experiences requiring teamwork, and valued traditions with innovation.
