HANOVER, N.H.—The ninth annual Tuck GIVES auction (Grants to Interns and Volunteers for the Environment and Society) was held April 7-9, 2009. Students, faculty, and staff from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth participated in the student-run event, which provides an opportunity for members of the Tuck community to support students who accept nonprofit, service-based summer internships. This year's event raised over $49,000 through a combination of silent and live auctions.
"Tuck GIVES exemplifies to me what separates Tuck from other business schools. The event represents the commitment and dedication of the community at large to create change and make a difference in the world around us," says Ann Naughton, a second-year student and member of the Tuck GIVES leadership team. "It demonstrates the infectious spirit of the entire Tuck community in its overall desire to leave the world a better place." The Tuck GIVES leadership team of second-year students also included Jon Edwards, Michael Giordano, Margo Lalonde, and Ann Naughton.
The theme for this year's auction was a masquerade ball, and students came dressed in their best formal attire. Students not only supported their peers through monetary donations but also offered their own skills and services in the auction. Silent auction items included a day of lessons and sailing at Dartmouth's sailing center, dinner at a professor's house, and a one-hour flight with Tuck's resident pilot. For the live auction, popular items were a weekend at Mid Ocean Club in Bermuda, Tuck Night at Dean Steven Lubrano's house, and a Mexican dinner with games and dancing.
"Tuck GIVES is another example of the Tuck community working together to make a positive difference. Our MBA interns will use their business skills at nonprofit and public sector organizations around the world helping people in need," says Patricia Palmiotto, director of the Allwin Initiative for Corporate Citizenship, a sponsor of the event.
Last year's auction funded nine student internship positions in agriculture, healthcare, public education, and other industries. Specific organizations for which students worked included Grassroot Soccer in South Africa, Asian Development Bank in the Philippines, World Experience for Georgia in the Republic of Georgia, Aquaya Institute in Kenya, TechnoServe in Swaziland, Communities in Schools in Washington D.C., the city school district in New York City, and the Vermont Agency of Agriculture.
Officially begun in 2001, Tuck GIVES is a formalization of an annual Tuck-wide solicitation process to support nonprofit and public-sector internships. Tuck GIVES is organized by students, with support from Tuck's Allwin Initiative for Corporate Citizenship and the Dean's Office. Other sponsors this year include Constellation Brands.
