In The Wisdom of Finance: Discovering Humanity in the World of Risk and Return, my friend and HBS Professor Mihir Desai shows how the big ideas of finance can be mapped to ways to understand one’s life. Each chapter is a big idea of finance (risk, valuation, leverage, etc) but the intuition is developed entirely by using the humanities - literature, history, philosophy etc. And, through the use of the humanities, the ideas of finance take on greater humanity. The result is designed to be a) an accessible roadmap to finance, b) a way to use finance to think about life’s problems, and c) a guide to allow practitioners of finance to approach their work with more humanity. For example, Greek tragedies are used to talk about bankruptcy, Anthony Trollope is a guide to risk management, and Mel Brooks is a guide to corporate governance. It’s an unusual book, but easy to read and useful.
