Reunion 2007
|
More than 700 people returned to Hanover for Reunion 2007, making it the largest in Tuck's history. Of note was the attendance of Steve Osman T'57, who was at Tuck to celebrate his 50th reunion. The Osman Tuck Alumni Lifelong Learning (TALL) classes (supported by Steve and his wife, Harley) featured talks by Tuck faculty, including Sydney Finkelstein on "Why Smart Executives Fail," Professor Eric Johnson on "Information Security in a Web 2.0 World," Matthew Slaughter on "A New Deal for Globalization," and John Vogel on "Solving the Subprime Mortgage Problem." Dean Paul Danos gave his State of the School Address, outlining the launch of Tuck 2012, the school's plan to create Tuck's MBA program of the future. The fall foliage was fabulous for the Saturday morning Fun Run and the breakfast on Health and Wellness that followed. A TV in Byrne Hall broadcast World Series game #3 for diehard fans. In all, music, merriment, and catching up with friends was the order of the day. Reunion 2008 is October 10-12 for all classes ending in 3 or 8. Mark your calendars!

Jim Allwin T'76: In Memoriam
|

Jim Allwin T'76 |
A man who embodied many ideals of a great citizen and business leader passed away on October 19, 2007. Tuck Overseer Jim Allwin had great passion for giving back, and his contributions in the areas of education, health care, and the arts were extraordinary. "In some ways he seemed larger than life in his stature, his calm, and his commanding presence, but he was also accessible, kind, and self-effacing," recalls Dean Paul Danos. "His presence will always be felt here at Tuck as the Allwin Initiative for Corporate Citizenship continues to influence our students. We who benefited from his friendship will miss him, but his legacy of sharing will live on and his life will be a continuing inspiration."

Tuck in the News
Tuck continues to receive widespread media coverage. This fall, Forbes and The Wall Street Journal released their B-school rankings with Tuck at #1 on both lists. This is the second consecutive time that Tuck received the top slot in the Forbes ranking, which looks at return on investment. The Journal's ranking, based on recruiter surveys, stated that "Tuck received its highest ratings this year for its 'well-rounded' students, their personal integrity, interpersonal and communication skills, and teamwork abilities." Tuck professors have also been garnering press, including Matthew Slaughter's September op-ed piece in the Journal called "Let's Have a Real Debate on Globalization" in which he comments on globalization and the Democratic presidential candidate debates held at Dartmouth. And Tuck students had their share of media coverage, including Kate Reiling T'09, who wrote two MBA-journal pieces for the Times. She describes Tuck this way: "It's a culture of my new friends throwing me a surprise 30th birthday party after knowing me for less than a week. It's a culture that challenges and supports me…. It's the second-years who throw a scavenger hunt for the first-year class. It's the alumni who are so connected to the culture that they call you back filled with envy that 'you're at Tuck.'"

Tuck in London
Many of our alumni attended the second annual Tuck in London event in October. Osman TALL classes were led by Tuck Professors Andrew Bernard on China and global business, John Owens T'61 on the Tuck Global Consultancy program, and Kent Womack on understanding wall street analysts' biases and value. Classes were followed by cocktails and dinner with Dean Danos and dinner speaker David Blanchflower of Dartmouth and the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee. We expect to be back across the pond next fall. Stay tuned.
