Guest Blog: A Tuck Partner’s Take on Applying & ASW

By Blog Guest

Marcy (TP '14) and Zach Hogan (T '14) currently live in Northern California. Zach works as a chemical engineer in San Francisco, Marcy is a stay-at-home mom to their two boys.

About a year ago my husband, Zach, began the process of applying to business school.  On the strong recommendation of an good friend (a T’12) he added Tuck to the list of schools to consider, and it quickly became a top choice.  At first I was more than a bit apprehensive.  First of all, we currently live in California, and New Hampshire seemed really, really far away and foreign.  We’ve never lived through what people would really call “winter” (and I’m not much of a cold-weather person) so I was worried about spending half of the next two years submerged in snow.  Also, Hanover is a pretty remote location-- we have two young boys who adore their grandparents, and I worried about taking them even farther away from our families.

But as we continued through the application process, I learned more about Tuck.  I was impressed by the program’s high rankings, by its reputation for being collaborative (vs competitive) and family-friendly, and by the physical beauty of the area. It didn’t hurt that anyone we talked to who has spent much time in the area had nothing but great things to say about it. However, even knowing all this I still felt conflicted about the thought of moving to New Hampshire.

Fast-forward to ASW this past weekend. Everything we had heard about Tuck proved itself true.  We were blessed with absolutely gorgeous weather which showed off Hanover, and the Tuck campus, in all their glory.  The incredible school spirit felt by the students, faculty, and alumni was positively infectious. And as a partner I truly felt included in everything. I walked away feeling certain that Tuck will not only be an incredible experience and benefit for Zach as a student, but for me and our children as well.  I have no doubt in my mind that this is where we are supposed to be, and am so excited to begin this new adventure as a family in a few months.
